NSW Police Victorious 2017

The NSW Police Rugby League team commenced their Tri-series campaign, flying to Townsville on Wednesday 10 May 2017 and booking into their flash digs, just near the Cowboys leagues club. After several slick training runs, the team led by now veteran plays, Dave Cox and Mitch West were ready to tackle their Queensland counterparts on Saturday afternoon.

Coach Sheridan revved the team up and a tough nail bitter was about to unfold. Queensland struck first scoring a four pointer which was converted to lead six (6) nil. NSW toughed it out and NSW’s Mitch West scored late in the second half to make the half-time score six (6) all.

The second half was one of those games not for the feint hearted. After a dropped ball by NSW, Queensland scored a length of the field try. However, the NSW spirit lifted the boys to dig deep and Corey White scored a nice try from dummy half. Queensland had a glut of possession and keep storming the NSW try-line but NSW kept tackling themselves to a standstill.

Queensland had a last- ditch attempt to score right on full time with a kick chase plan put into action. However, NSW’s Andy Hiam charged the ball down, repelling the Queensland’s attempt for victory. Full-time twelve (12) points all. NSW retain the shield after being reigning champions.

In the second game, NSW backed up on the Sunday to take on the hungry affiliated states team who were fresh and attempting to build on their win from 2016. The Affiliated States came out fired up and tried to intimidate the NSW team with punishing defence. Again, it was the NSW spirit which infected the team to produce a never give up attitude and NSW went into the sheds at half-time leading eight (8) points to four (4).

In the second half NSW skipped away with tries to James dine and Andrew Hiam which were both converted by Rhys Millar. The full-time score NSW twenty (20), Affiliated States four (4).

Congratulations to all players, coaches, trainers and officials for their participation and organising this great event. Thanks to Queensland and Glenn ‘Chalkey’ Peatlin for organising a great carnival and Townsville for making us welcome.
