After Country won the inaugural City V Country Game in Mudgee 2021, both teams were fired up to take on each other at the seventh wonder of the world, the iconic Leichhardt Oval, home of the Balmain and now Wests/Tigers.
The winner would be the inaugural recipients of the new ‘Gregory – Laughlin’ named after the two captains, Nerida Gregory and Sandra Laughlin. Both teams were keen to win, but also try and get selected into another part of history, the first NSWPRL Women’s team, to take on the QLD Police Women’s team on Friday 10 June, 2022, also at the seventh wonder of the world.
The game was a gem, with both sides showing spirit, courage, athleticism, teamwork and respect.
Both teams dug deep and truly provided a great spectacle for the high spirited crowd. Country prevailed in the near perfect playing conditions winning by 14 points- tries Maggie Townsend, Hayley Joseph & Nicole Holmes. Goal: Gabrielle Suckling, to hold city to nil. A strong NSWPRLW side will be chosen from these teams. Thanks ladies for your spirited performance.
A special thanks to Rob Gleeson for the fantastic photographs.
