The NSW Police Rugby League Country Championships were held at beautiful Nelson Bay on 12-14 March 2014. The Hunter Hawkesbury Kangaroos, the Country North Cowboys and the Country South Boars provided a strong standard of rugby league. Hunter Hawkesbury were crowned the Country Champions for the second year running, but all team one one game each and the scorelines tight. Read more and view gallery............

The NSW Police Rugby League team are the Australian National Champions after winning both games in Adelaide. Ten Debutant's complimented the experienced NSW players to dominate the 2013 Tri-series.

The trip was a fantastic experience for all players, coaching staff and officials who stayed at the luxurious Hilton Hotel in Adelaide.

Great camaraderie's were forged between the group and the spirit was evident on and off the field, and will hold those in the 2014 in good stead to take on the Queenslander's at Suncorp Stadium next year, in celebration of the Queensland Police 150 year of Policing celebrations.

Police Teams, NSW Players, Teams, 1930

The larger photo was taken in July 1930.  It was taken prior to the police V fire brigade match.  My father is in the front row—2nd from left—and the same Wal Maisey is in the back row, 2nd from left.  Dad told me that Ron Waldron who later became Commissioner, is in the photo.  I am not sure, but I seem to think that he is in the back row, 3rd from the left.  Maybe you have access to some old photos of Commissioners past which will help you identify him.

The jumper was blue with a white V.  Pity I did not have Dad write the names on the back of the photo while he was still with us.  Hope these photos are of some use.

INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY RON WEBER

My father told me, when I was a young boy, that the police played rugby union in a mid-week competition with other public service branches.  My father, Ben Weber, played rugby league on the weekends with Balmain.

The small photo was taken at Bombala in 1929, which is the year after Dad joined the force.  He is 4th from the left in the back row.  On his left is Wal Maisey (not sure about the spelling).  I can just remember Wal coming to our house in Drummoyne and I seem to remember Dad telling me that Wal rode motor bikes.
